What is custom embroidered clothing?
Custom embroidery is the process of stitching your design into clothing using a needle and thread. Unlike printing, embroidery is stitched directly onto the fabric, ensuring maximum durability and adding a textured dimension to your design.
The first step in this process is converting your design into a file that can be read by an embroidery machine. This process is known as digitisation. Once converted, your file can be loaded into the machine and stitched into your chosen products.
Due to the longevity of embroidery, embroidered clothing is a popular choice in the corporate industry for uniforms, as well as being a great option for retail merchandise, such as embroidered T-shirts. The results are long-lasting, high quality and can really breathe life into your clothing through the use of vibrant colours.
Custom embroidered clothing is perfect for...
Thicker materials
Large order quantities of 50 to 25,000+
Less complex designs
Uniforms, workwear and retail products
Is custom embroidery right for you?

If you’re still not sure whether embroidery is the right choice for you, get in touch with our team of experts and we’ll be happy to help you find the best option to meet your needs.
The benefits of embroidery
We understand that choosing the right decoration method for your needs is not always an easy process. To make things a little easier, here’s a list of benefits of custom embroidered clothes:
- It is cost-effective for larger volumes
- Custom embroidered clothing gives a long-lasting finish
- All embroidery and finishing takes place in the UK
- Works well on products such as fleeces that aren’t suitable for printing
- Provides a professional finish
The disadvantages of embroidery
Like with all decoration methods, there are some trade-offs that come with embroidery. The main ones are:
- Can be less economical on small orders
- Not suitable for small text or highly detailed designs
- Generally not suitable for very large designs
Unsure of whether custom embroidery is right for your design? Don't worry, our experienced team will ensure you get the appropriate decoration method for your order.
Eco-friendly custom embroidered clothing
When it comes to sustainability, we know every stitch counts. It’s for this reason we ensure that your designs are brought to life with the most sustainable threads on the planet.
Our theads meet the world class OEKO-Tex certification and are produced in facilities that utilise recycled water and energy. This helps ensure that every single thread used on your products is as eco-friendly as possible.
Through increased durability and high quality colour fastness, we can ensure your products last longer, resulting in less waste and fewer replacements.
The best quality embroidery
Not all embroidery is created equal. It’s dependent upon the machines used, the digitisation and the threads. So don’t settle for second best with your business.
Quality and the environment are at the heart of what we do. We use market-leading machinery and only use Madeira Threads - the gold standard in our industry, ensuring outstanding quality and the highest environmental standards.
As a result of the quality we deliver, our embroidery will normally outlast the garments.
How much does it cost to get clothing embroidered?
Knowing how many items you need plays a big part in getting an accurate quote. A single embroidered T-shirt could be £35 or more, compared to 100 embroidered T-shirts which could be as little as £3.50 per T-shirt.
If you’re looking to place a small order and have a more limited budget, printing might be a better option for you.
Products that can be embroidered
The high quality, professional finish that custom embroidered clothing gives makes it a perfect decoration option for workwear and corporate uniforms.

Frequently asked questions about custom embroidered clothing
The price of your embroidery or printing can vary greatly depending on the quantity you require and your design. If you’re placing a small order printing will almost always be more economical. However, if placing a larger order embroidery can work out cheaper, especially on designs with lots of colours in them. You can request a quote for both printing and embroidery on our website, or if placing a small order you can get prices in real-time based on your design on our online shop.
We have no minimum order, so single unit orders are no problem, even with embroidery. If you want samples of your embroidered clothing, be aware that these will be significantly more expensive per item compared to a bulk order. A single embroidered T-shirt could be £35 or more, compared to 100 embroidered T-shirts which could be as little as £3.50 per product.
This is because the time involved in processing a single unit is generally almost the same as processing 100 units or more. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes and you have to account for staff involved in quoting, customer service, mockup designing, digitising, setting up, picking and packing your order.
As you can see, there are a lot of people involved in the production of your embroidered clothing, all of whom have to be paid. When you purchase 100 or more items with embroidery, these costs can be spread across the entire order, making the price per unit significantly lower.
Still unsure whether to opt for print or embroidery, check out our article here on ‘Printing or Embroidery: What’s the best option for your garments?’
When creating your design for embroidery, we recommend keeping it as simple as possible.
Unlike printing, embroidery uses threads, which are much thicker than ink particles. This means any small or intricate details may be lost when the design is stitched into the fabric. If you keep things simple, you can ensure your finished product will come out as close to the original design as possible.
We also usually advise our customers to keep their embroidered designs small. This is especially important when applying it to polos or T-shirts.
Polo shirts are typically quite thin, so a big complex embroidery is going to feel really heavy on the front and is likely to pull the front of the polo down. This heaviness is likely to be pretty uncomfortable as is the backing on the embroidery with this kind of coverage.
If you’re designing for workwear and you want a big company logo across the back, we’d recommend print, as there is nothing more frustrating for workers than their uniform rubbing or feeling uncomfortable during a full day’s work.
That being said, if you’ve got a nice small logo positioned on the left breast of a polo, it can look really smart. If you do want larger embroidery areas, we’d advise applying this only to heavier items like sweatshirts and hoodies, or even softshell jackets.
Still unsure on what size to have your embroidery? Check out our article on ‘what size should I print or embroider my logo’.
Digitising (or digitizing) is the process of converting your artwork file into a file that embroidery machines can use to work out the needle path.
This is a really critical part of the process because it plays a significant role in the final quality and appearance of your embroidered products.
The quality and durability of your products will be defined by the quality of the digitisation and the embroidery machine used. So when it comes to embroidery, it’s worth investing a little more upfront to ensure your embroidered shirts that will last your team years.
Logo embroidery is our speciality, so whether you need embroidered clothing in Glasgow, London, Leeds, Manchester, or anywhere in the UK or the world, we can help.
If you’re looking to have sweatshirts embroidered, we have you covered? You can order through our online shop in just minutes thanks to our nifty product designer that makes the process really simple.
Alternatively, if you need 25 or more items, all you need to do is request a quote and we’ll get back to you with a price.
If you’re looking for inspiration, get your team kitted out with our most popular sweatshirt for embroidery.
We typically advise adding your embroidery to the left breast (as worn) of a shirt. This is traditionally where logos are placed and has been chosen because research has shown that it is the most memorable position.
Is sublimation better than embroidery?
Sublimation printing is only really needed when you want your design to be printed all over a garment. Unless you need this all-over coverage, embroidery should deliver great results for your business’ embroidered uniform.
Is vinyl printing better than embroidery?
On small orders of items like waterproof coats, vinyl is a great option; as it allows you to add your branding to the products without damaging the waterproof outer layer. Whereas, embroidery would be better than vinyl on a fleece jacket, where vinyl would offer a great finish.
With this in mind, it’s important to understand that each process has its own benefits that are better in different circumstances. In short, there is no ‘best’ option.
In theory it sounds like a really cool creative idea but in practice, embroidery over the top of a print never works well. The embroidery needle and hoop (which is used to hold the garment in the machine) will damage the integrity of the print.
Absolutely, whether you require smart corporate wear shirts that are personalised with your logo, or casual polo shirts for your coffee shop with your branding embroidered on, we can help.
Threads don’t come in every Pantone colour available as there are just too many.
To ensure your embroidery is as close to your preferred Pantone colour as possible, we use an industry-standard Pantone matching system. This allows us to find the closest thread to your Pantone reference.
If you’re unsure about artwork formatting for embroidery, head over to our artwork guide, for more information.
With printing, requirements for artwork files are pretty specific, however, surprisingly embroidery is actually more straightforward.
You can submit almost any image file type for embroidery, and it will generally be okay for digitising. We typically advise sending files over in PNG or AI format for embroidery.
When you send us your artwork for your embroidered T-shirt or other garments, our team will convert it into a special file that is read by the embroidery machine. This is known as digitisation.
Some companies make things difficult for buyers with pricing based on confusing stitch counts (who knows how many stitches are in their logo?!), as well as adding surprise setup fees on at the end.
We prefer to keep things simple: all we need to know is whether it’s a big logo or a small one to get you a price. We don’t charge setup fees, and you can even place your embroidered T-shirts order online.

Why Custom Embroidered Vegan T-Shirts Are Perfect For Your Staff
Unlike printing, where cotton is the material that achieves the best results, embroidery works on a diverse array of fabrics. It is best suited to heavier items, like hoodies, jackets and sweatshirts, though it can be used for most fabric weights.
Small designs look great on the left breast of polo shirts, T-shirts, jackets, and more. We’ve even embroidered onto tote bags, which makes for a unique change from the classic printed tote.
Some designs that are more complex require more stitches (this is referred to as having a higher stitch count). This greater number of stitches means they can be on the machines for hours at a time.
As you can imagine, if you order 1000+ hoodies with a really complex embroidery design, they can take up a number of machines for several days.
For the fastest turnaround times, we advise keeping things as simple as possible. We have the capacity to print & embroider over 7,000 garments a day, so rest assured if you’re after bulk embroidered workwear, we’re the perfect partner.
You don’t need to be a print or embroidery expert to work with us. Either order online and upload your design to our product designer or request a quote for your embroidered workwear and we’ll do the rest.
Embroidery branding, in short, is where you add your logo to products such as workwear or uniform through the application of embroidery. Branded workwear is a great way to give your team a cohesive branded professional look.
This is really down to the design and its complexity. However, we advise keeping your design around 70-110mm wide for left breast embroideries and no larger than 250mm wide on larger designs.
Embroidery backing is used to stabilise your embroidery so it doesn’t pucker and is more durable.
There are 2 types of backing, cut out, and tear away. Tear away backing is more suited to heavier items like hoodies where the garment itself is thick enough to prevent the embroidery from puckering.
On lighter items like T-shirts and polo’s cut out backing is used. Most of this backing material will stay within the garment and only the excess will be cut away from the edges. This ensures the embroidery stays in place and lasts longer.
Backing material is industry standard and is required for durable high-quality embroideries.
