Frequently asked questions about T-shirt embroidery
Working out how many items you need early on is critical to getting the most accurate quote from your T-shirt embroidery company. The quantity has a huge influence on the price.
If you’re aiming to simply buy as many T-shirts as you can within your budget, it’s worth advising us of the budget, so we can then provide you with the best suitable options to get the most out of your budget.
This really depends on your design, the quantity required and your budget. If you have a highly complex design like a photograph or want a very small quantity of T-shirts, print may be the best option for you. However, if you're looking for a professional finish and your design work is something a little more simple like a logo, embroidery would make a great choice, particularly on a larger quantity order where you can benefit from the best possible price.
Does embroidery cost more than printing?
At A.M. Custom Clothing, we offer a lot of cost-effective options to help our customers that have tight budgets. However, when you’re comparing prices for T-shirt embroidery online, it’s important to remember that companies offering exceedingly cheap T-shirt print prices can only do so by cutting corners in quality, customer service, and/or ethics.
Contact our team today to see how we can make your budget stretch as far as possible without sacrificing the other factors you care about.
It is possible to make your own embroidered custom T-shirts at home. However, this is just like any other profession you can do yourself, but, it takes longer and doesn’t typically yield the same great results.
We use some of the most advanced equipment for embroidering T-shirts and we also have some of the most skilled people to embroider your T-shirts in our UK facilities, so you can be sure you’re getting the best quality when you buy from A.M. Custom Clothing.
Not only that, but you don’t need to spend money on equipment or stress about getting things right. Just place your order through our shop or request a quote from our team and we’ll take care of the rest.
For complex images with lots of colours and shades, like a photograph, we'd recommend opting for printed T-shirts for the best possible results.
The cost of printing anything onto a T-shirt depends on several factors. The main factors are the number of T-shirts that you’re producing and the complexity of your design.
A single embroidered T-shirt could be as much as £35, however, when ordering 100 the price could be as little as £3.50 per item.
Thankfully, it’s easy to calculate the cost of embroidering a T-shirt when you use our online shop. Just choose the T-shirt you want and add your logo or other artwork. The designer will then automatically calculate the price based on the quantity you’ve selected.
Alternative, you can request a quote if you’re buying more than 25 units and you’ll receive a price in your inbox in just minutes.
Most T-shirts are made from cotton or a blend of cotton and polyester. Generally, cotton is the most appropriate fabric as it provides a balance between breathability, softness, cost, and quality.
Polyester is a synthetic fibre that’s mainly used for sportswear. It is generally lighter, more breathable and will dry faster than cotton.
Other materials like bamboo and rayon each have their own pros and cons. It’s not that one offers better quality over the other, but they each have scenarios for which they are best suited.
Threads don’t come in every Pantone colour available as there are just too many.
To ensure your embroidery is as close to your preferred Pantone colour as possible, we use an industry-standard Pantone matching system. This allows us to find the closest thread to your Pantone reference.
If you’re unsure about artwork formatting for embroidery, head over to our artwork guide, for more information.
Some companies charge set-up fees for producing embroidered T-shirts. This is typically designed to cover the cost of converting your artwork into a file that embroidery machines can read, otherwise known as digitising. You should always check that the embroidery company you’re using has included all of these charges in their quote.
We keep things simple, we don’t charge setup fees, and you can even place your embroidered T-shirts order online.
Yes, we can embroider oversized T-shirts for your business or brand. Oversized t-shirts are becoming increasingly popular, not just as a fashion item, but also for brands looking to provide fashion-forward options for uniforms and merchandise. Check our guide for personalised oversized t-shirts if you're unsure about what's available or whether they're right for you.
Ideally, you want to ensure your logo is in vector format, however, if you’re placing a smaller order, then a high-quality PNG will do the job. If you’re unsure, we’d recommend looking at our T-shirt printing artwork guide, to find out what format your artwork should be in. You’ll also be able to find print-ready templates for your artwork there too.
If you're looking for UK T-shirt embroidery, we can help. We have a number of production hubs across the UK, so whether you're in Chester, London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Bristol or anywhere in the UK we can help with your custom embroidered T-shirts.
We have no minimum order, so single unit orders are no problem, even with embroidery. If you want samples of your embroidered clothing, be aware that these will be significantly more expensive per item compared to a bulk order. A single embroidered T-shirt could be £35 or more, compared to 100 embroidered T-shirts which could be as little as £3.50 per product.
This is because the time involved in processing a single unit is generally almost the same as processing 100 units or more. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes and you have to account for staff involved in quoting, customer service, mockup designing, digitising, setting up, picking and packing your order.
As you can see, there are a lot of people involved in the production of your embroidered clothing, all of whom have to be paid. When you purchase 100 or more items with embroidery, these costs can be spread across the entire order, making the price per unit significantly lower.
Still unsure whether to opt for print or embroidery, check out our article here on ‘Printing or Embroidery: What’s the best option for your garments?’
When creating your design for embroidery, we recommend keeping it as simple as possible.
Unlike printing, embroidery uses threads, which are much thicker than ink particles. This means any small or intricate details may be lost when the design is stitched into the fabric. If you keep things simple, you can ensure your finished product will come out as close to the original design as possible.
We also usually advise our customers to keep their embroidered designs small. This is especially important when applying it to polos or T-shirts.
Polo shirts are typically quite thin, so a big complex embroidery is going to feel really heavy on the front and is likely to pull the front of the polo down. This heaviness is likely to be pretty uncomfortable as is the backing on the embroidery with this kind of coverage.
If you’re designing for workwear and you want a big company logo across the back, we’d recommend print, as there is nothing more frustrating for workers than their uniform rubbing or feeling uncomfortable during a full day’s work.
That being said, if you’ve got a nice small logo positioned on the left breast of a T-shirt or polo, it can look really smart. If you do want larger embroidery areas, we’d advise applying this only to heavier items like sweatshirts and hoodies, or even softshell jackets.
Still unsure on what size to have your embroidery? Check out our article on ‘what size should I print or embroider my logo’.
Embroidery backing is used to stabilise your embroidery so it doesn’t pucker and is more durable. This is particularly pertinent on thinner products like T-shirts.
There are 2 types of backing, cut out, and tear away. Tear away backing is more suited to heavier items like hoodies where the garment itself is thick enough to prevent the embroidery from puckering.
On lighter items like T-shirts and polo’s cut out backing is used. Most of this backing material will stay within the garment and only the excess will be cut away from the edges. This ensures the embroidery stays in place and lasts longer.
Backing material is industry standard and is required for durable high-quality embroideries.
We typically advise adding your embroidery to the left breast (as worn) of a T-shirt. This is traditionally where logos are placed and has been chosen because research has shown that it is the most memorable position.
