Cost-Effective Alternatives to Woven Labels for Your Clothing Brand

When it comes to custom clothing, branding is key, but that doesn’t necessarily mean branded woven labels are the way to go. Studies show these labels don’t increase sales directly, they’re mostly about brand awareness. Unless you’re a globally recognised brand like Nike, woven labels can be costly, especially for smaller orders, and can introduce unnecessary complexity, from additional manufacturing steps to compliance with legal requirements. Fortunately, there are effective, cost-saving alternatives to achieve brand visibility without the added expense and hassle of relabelling. This guide explores affordable, efficient options, from tear-out tags to supply chain transparency, to help you showcase your brand proudly and strategically.

Tear out tags

We suggest purchasing garments with ‘Tear Out Tags’, and then simply print your logo on the outside of the nape (nape = back of neck). You can then tear out the manufacturer’s neck label by hand.

Why the outside you ask?! Here’s 3 reasons why:

  1.  You can print on the outside of almost any product – ensuring consistency. You can’t print on the inside of products like sweatshirts.
  2. Your customer can see  where they got their t-shirt, and so can anyone who sees them (double win!)
  3. It’s cheaper and has no minimum order (if via our online shop).

The real question is, why does anyone put their branding on the inside where no one can see it?!?!

Be proud of your manufacturers and be transparent

The second alternative is to buy products you’re proud of, and then you don’t need to worry about tear out tags.

Our Neutral® Fairtrade Product range is great for this. Many brands take pride in the Neutral® branding printed in the neck; as this shows that they’re working with one of the best and most certified manufacturers in the world. A great example of this can be found here, where our client used transparency to her advantage, leading to her products being stocked in luxury retailer Selfridges, among others.

Supply chain transparency is ever increasing, make yours transparent, save money, and most importantly put your logo where people will see it!

Other ways your clothing brand can save money

Buy in bulk for the best prices

This sounds very counterproductive from an environmental point of view, but if you have a good idea of how many products you’ll sell then buying more, means you benefit from economies of scale. The more you buy the lower the price per product.

Keep your designs and products simple

Having multiple print areas, mixed production methods and complex elements, is generally the killer of startup t-shirt brands. This is because production gets very expensive, slow and it generally means high minimums that wipe out your cash flow before you even start.

People buy brands and stories. Gymshark is a good example of this, they’re one of the fastest growing fitness brands in the UK, yet nearly every single one of their t-shirts features nothing more than a simple print to the front. People love the Gymshark brand, not the print locations.

You can have incredible design work, but we suggest keeping it to placement prints on the front and back for the lowest price.
